Perodou, Dominique; Latrouite, Daniel.

ArchiMer
Febvre, Michèle.
The oocyte atresia are studied in captive Serranus cabrilla Linne, and compared to the atresia which occur during corresponding cycle periods. Whereas physiological atresia are difficult to reveal, atresia in captivity depend on the capture period, laboratory conditions and on the duration of the experiment. The oocyte modifications are described and discussed.

The velvet swimming crab Necora puber, commonly found on the French coast was an important resource for inshore fishermen of the Mor-Braz sea in Southern Brittany before the production collapsed in 1985. Although there are still many uncertainties as to the reasons for this, we note that the collapse took place after a significant ecological imbalance which locally caused massive mortality of many marine organisms in 1982. Without being obviously linked to the former point, mortality due to pathological causes was observed in velvet swimming crabs. Seeing the lack of general knowledge about these crabs, this study was designed to acquire data about its fishery and its biology. The first part focused on fleet, fishing effort and yield trends in the...

Gerard, Andre; Naciri-graven, Yamama; Boudry, Pierre; Launey, Sophie; Heurtebise, Serge; Ledu, Christophe; Phelipot, Pascal.
At the end of the 1980s, after two decades of aquaculture research in molluscs, Ifremer initiated its first genetic studies. These new studies quickly revealed the limits of knowledge in aquaculture, particularly in terms of controlling oyster reproduction. This presentation attempts to summarize the available information on genetics in aquaculture. In particular, breeding practices in the 1980s involved populations of broodstock, while genetics requires modern techniques where individuals, not just populations, can be identified. Controlling reproduction at the individual level in oysters raises new questions that existing protocols cannot address, especially in terms of controlling sex determination, individual maturity, spawning synchrony, chemical...

Loots, Christophe.
Spawning is a crucial phase of fish life cycle as it ensures the renewal of individuals in the population. The identification of factors that influence its spatial dynamic is therefore a key feature as it will affect the reproduction success of fish population. A multi-model approach has been developed in order to identify factors that control the spatial distribution of spawning adults of plaice and whiting in the North Sea and of anchovy in the Bay of Biscay. Generalised additive models have been used to relate presenceabsence of adults and their abundances to several hypotheses of control external (geographical position and environment) and internal to the population (spatial dependency, size, age structure and memory). Models were then ranked according...

Corallimorphus profundus in shallow Antarctic habitats: Bionomics, histology, and systematics (Cnidaria: Hexacorallia) Naturalis
Riemann-Zürneck, K.; Iken, K..
In March 2000 and November/December 2001 thirteen specimens of Corallimorphus profundus Moseley, 1877, a conspicuous, anemone-like cnidarian, were hand-sampled by SCUBA diving in 30 to 40 m depth off US Palmer Station, Antarctic Peninsula. Corallimorphus species were formerly recorded only from deep water habitats from where they had been brought up more or less damaged, with most of their epithelia lost or macerated. The present well preserved specimens offer the opportunity to study various aspects of the species’ morphology and biology, particularly as one mature female contained a full cycle of oogenesis besides two batches of brooded developmental stages. Most of the results obtained demonstrate that the genus Corallimorphus shows features and...

Correlation between urinary tract infection and reproductive performance of sows R. Bras. Zootec.
Moura,Rafael de; Caldara,Fabiana Ribeiro; Foppa,Luciana; Machado,Simone Pereira; Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Garcia,Rodrigo Garófallo; Gonçalves,Liliane Maria Piano.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess the prevalence and influence of urinary tract infection on the reproductive performance of sows. The animals underwent urine tests using reagent strips and diagnosed as positive or negative. They were then divided into two groups of 30 positive and 30 negative sows for urinary tract infection. Each sow was considered an experimental unit and was followed from labor to weaning. The animals were assessed for their reproductive performance (labor duration, number of live births, mummified piglets, and stillbirths, and postpartum diseases). After weaning, the weaning-estrus interval and rate of return to estrus were assessed. A thermographic camera was used to identify hyperthermia of the mammary system and its relation with...

Couple formation and spawning between two female Discus Fish (Symphysodon aequifasciatus - Cichlidae) in captivity Acta Amazonica
MATTOS,Douglas da Cruz; SCRENCI-RIBEIRO,Rafaela; CARDOSO,Leonardo Demier; JUNIOR,Manuel Vazquez Vidal.
ABSTRACT In an experiment performed to characterize the reproductive behavior of the discus fish in captivity, couple formation with two females was observed. The observations were carried out in captivity, based on ad libitum methodology. Adult individuals were allowed to naturally form couples. The couple formation was considered when individuals performed the substrate cleaning behavior. Fifteen couples were selected. The eggs of three couples did not initiate embryonic development and became infeasible within three days after spawning. We found that these spawnings belonged to all-female couples. The sex of the individuals in same-sex couples was confirmed through subsequent couple formation and spawning of fertile eggs with known males. Eggs were...

Courtship, vocalization, and tadpole description of Epipedobates flavopictus (Anura: Dendrobatidae) in southern Goiás, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Costa,Ronan Caldeira; Facure,Kátia Gomes; Giaretta,Ariovaldo Antonio.
Epipedobates flavopictus is a diurnal, aposematic dendrobatid with a wide distribution in seasonal wet tropical regions of Brazil. We describe the daily period of vocalization, advertisement call, courtship behavior, and tadpole of E. flavopictus from a previously unknown population in southern Goiás and compare theses features with that of other populations. Studies were carried out in November (2004) and February (2005). We counted the number of calling males and duration of calling bouts in the morning and evening periods. The advertisement call was recorded with a digital recorder. Tadpole description was based on specimens collected in pools. Males called from well-illuminated sites such as rocky fields, rain channels, and borders of riverine forests....

Leite,Fosca Pedini Pereira.
The post-marsupial growth, sexual differentiation, fecundity and reproductive biology of Hyale media Dana, 1853 living on Sargassum cymosum C. Agardh, 1820 are described. The growth was continuous througth 12 stages for males and 9 for females. The sexual differentiation occours at 2th or 3th moult and was demonstrated by the enlargment of the gnatopod II propod. Number of eggs increased with the female head length. Observations of courtship behavior, incubation, moult processes, emergence of juveniles and brood caracteristics were made. The precopula courtship continued for two days, the eggs were incubated for six days and the juveniles, that stay until three days in the marsupium, moult every day.

Cryopreservation of mutton snapper (Lutjanus analis) sperm Anais da ABC (AABC)
SANCHES,EDUARDO G.; OLIVEIRA,IDILI R.; SERRALHEIRO,PEDRO C. DA SILVA; CERQUEIRA,VINICIUS R..
This study aimed to develop a protocol of semen cryopreservation of the mutton snapper Lutjanus analis. The interaction between three extenders ( pH 6.1; 7.8 and 8.2) , two concentrations of dimethyl sulfoxide ( DMSO, 5 and 10%) and three cooling rates ( -90; -60 and -30°C.min−1) on the sperm motility rate and motility time were analyzed by a factorial experiment. A sample of 30 fishes ( 1,261 ± 449 g) collected in the nature was kept in floating net cages. The semen was frozen by using cryogenic straws, in nitrogen vapour and transferred, later, to liquid nitrogen. Fertilization test was accomplished to evaluate the viability of the cryopreserved sperm. The highest sperm motility rate and motility time ( P < 0.05) was achieved by combining extender C (...

Cycle de reproduction naturelle de l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe.
Since its introduction to French coasts in the 1970s, Crassostrea gigas completes its reproductive cycle—i.e. regular annual recruitment and establishment of natural populations—in only two sectors (Charentes coast and Arcachon Bay). In other areas of Pacific oyster production (Normandy, Brittany, Vendée, Mediterranean), complete gametogenesis may occur, resulting in spawning events and even recruitment in favourable temperatures. Temperature seems to be the main limiting factor for in situ reproduction. Growth and reproduction occur simultaneously. The study of the reproductive cycle of one-year old oysters showed that gametogenesis was asynchronous with high interannual variability and growth appeared to take precedence over reproduction. On the...

DAIRY HEIFER MORBIDITY, MORTALITY, AND HEALTH MANAGEMENT FOCUSING ON PREWEANED HEIFERS AgEcon
Ott, Stephen L..
The National Dairy Heifer Evaluation Project ( NDHEP ) was conducted by the National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS ) from April 1991 through July 1992. A total of 921 producers monitored calves on a daily basis from the first through the eighth week of life; results were extrapolated to the U.S. dairy population. Mortality of heifer calves was examined according to region ( west, midwest, northeast, southeast ). Mortality was highest in the western region ( 9.1 percent ) and lowest in the midwestern region ( 5.6 percent ). Calf deaths were highest in the two quarters October-December and January-March ( 8.4 percent each quarter ) and lowest in the quarter April-June ( 5.2 percent ). The overall average of stillborn calves was 1.6 percent. Calving...

Description of the reproductive behavior of Symphysodon aequifasciatus (Cichlidae) in captivity Acta Amazonica
MATTOS,Douglas da Cruz; SCRENCI-RIBEIRO,Rafaela; CARDOSO,Leonardo Demier; JUNIOR,Manuel Vazquez Vidal.
ABSTRACT The blue discus (Symphysodon aequifasciatus) is often sold for ornamental purposes. It is a neotropical cichlid from South America, which is native to the rivers of the Amazon basin of Brazil, Peru and Colombia. The purpose of this study was to characterize the reproductive behavior of S. aequifasciatus and identify features that can later be used by breeders to facilitate the handling and reproduction of this species in captivity. The experiment was divided into two stages: the first dealt with partner selection and couple formation to observe the behaviors of territoriality, pursuing, fleeing, biting, stay, protecting and cleaning of the substrate. The second stage documented mating behavior, nesting and parental care, to observe vibration,...
